BBQ Becky and the Dangers of White Assumptions

BBQ Becky is proof that the internet has no chill.

BBQ Becky (real name Jennifer Shulte) has seen herself become the meme of the moment. And it all started because she wanted to call the cops on black people minding their business at Lake Merritt. From there, the internet took the situation by storm. She has been pictured from calling the cops on Wakandans to even calling the cops on President Obama. Her idealistic choice of dealing with her own inner whiteness has turned on her in the most hilarious way.

Yet, the issue that BBQ Becky presents is no laughing matter.

How BBQ Becky Is Problematic

As of recently, there has been a string of calling-the-cops-to-arrest-black-people situations happening. Remember the Starbucks fiasco that occurred those few moons ago? How about the Chikesia Clemons and her sexually violent arrest at a Mobile, Alabama Waffle House? Or the police being called on the AirBNB because of blackness? Or the black Yale students having the police called on them because black skin? In reality, I just wanted to notate the common denominator within all of these situations: white comfort being challenged.

It is one thing to bring forth white tears. But, all bets must be off when it comes to endangered white comfort.

BBQ Becky Represents Many White People

What is even more alarming is how many white people feel about this. The owner of the AirBNB actually said that rudeness was the cause of the police being called. And there are others that would justify the actions of each and every situation that has occurred for black people having the police being called on them. It seems that plenty of white people would do this. In the end, some have no problem with calling the police on black people for no serious reason.

However, my better intuition should have kicked in. You see, this is the prime example of how black people are always dehumanized to the point we can’t expected to be treated humanely. No matter how much they smile and wave, many white people will never see black people as human. They live by the “black savage” mantra. It allows them to revel in their privileged whiteness that much more.

And this is how real racism works. Who needs someone to call you a nigger when they can easily call the police because you exist? Who would logically make simple things like “taking a nap” and “asking for plastic silverware” a means to having someone arrested? How many of us understand the racist history of loitering laws to truly know why the Starbucks situation is troubling? Real racism is the synergy of using the law to punish black people for the color of their skin and not the content of their character.

BBQ Becky Endgame

At the end of the day, BBQ Becky’s roasting is a hilarious response to a matter of dire straits. Her response was just racism dujour. And this is what has to be understood: black people are not seen as human. So, why would white people allow the dehumanized to do humanized things? Therefore, all the hilariousness will never cover for the ugly, dangerous actions that has brought out the comedy.

I swear black people laugh to keep from crying.

‘Nuff Said and ‘Nuff Respect!!!
